2025 Mercedes-Benz EQS debuts with larger battery

Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday unveiled updates to the EQS, which will arrive in showrooms later this year as a 2025 model.

The EQS first appeared in the 2022 model year, and Mercedes has added updates to the large electric hatchback every year since, but sales continue to struggle. Last year Mercedes sold just 6,688 units in the U.S., almost half of all S-Class sales.

The 2025 EQS has a larger 118 kwh battery. Mercedes has not provided a range estimate, but it would provide more range than the current 108 kwh battery; the EPA-estimated top range for the 2024 EQS is 352 miles.

Also helping to increase the range of the 2025 EQS is new regenerative braking software that, according to Mercedes, is able to recover more energy. This joins efficiency boosters added to the 2024, including a heat pump and an all-wheel-drive grade disconnect feature that switches from all-wheel-drive mode to two-wheel-drive mode when extra traction is not needed.

The 2025 EQS will be easy to spot thanks to a more traditionally designed front end and Mercedes star hood ornament; an AMG line front mask will also be standard; and the 2025 EQS will be available with an AMG line front fascia.

Mercedes has also made an effort to enhance the cabin's luxury feel. Chrome accents have been added, and the rear comfort pillows have contrast stitching and leather piping. The rear seats themselves are also more comfortable, with foam padding added to the backrests. An electronic adjustment feature allows the rear seats to recline from 27 to 36 degrees, depending on the grade.

The EQS is scheduled for more significant updates next year. A camouflaged prototype has been spotted, and it appears to be equipped with new headlights and a newly designed fascia on both ends. Rumored mechanical updates include a more efficient cell design for the battery, a new motor design, and the addition of a two-speed transmission for high-speed cruising.
