2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door coupe EV caught on video.

Mercedes-Benz AMG, known for its V8 and V12 engines, is moving toward offering a diverse electric vehicle portfolio.

The Affalterbach tuner, which already offers its own versions of Mercedes' EQE sedan, EQE SUV, and EQS hatchback, is currently working on its first dedicated EV, the prototype of which has again been spotted.

The exclusive EV will be based on AMG's proprietary modular EV platform known as AMG.EA and is expected to debut in late 2025 or early the following year. Based on this timing, it is expected to be introduced in the U.S. as a 2027 model.

As the spy shots and videos indicate, the EV will be a four-door, ultra-sleek hatchback and could replace the current GT 4-door coupe as an electric vehicle. Since the current GT 4-door coupe was updated just last year, the two versions will likely be sold together for a time.

Also in February, Mercedes announced that it had abandoned plans to go the electric-only route in major markets by the end of the decade. Instead, Mercedes plans to continue offering gas-powered vehicles for the next 10 years, and possibly longer. This means that the gas-powered GT 4-door coupe could last longer than previously planned.

AMG teased the possibility of designing its first EV-only car with the unveiling of the 2022 Vision AMG Concept. The concept was created to demonstrate the potential of the AMG.EA platform and was confirmed by AMG to be powered by an axial-flow motor developed by Yasa, a company wholly owned by Mercedes that specializes in high-performance electric motors.

Axial-flow motors are lighter and smaller than conventional radial-flux motors of comparable power. However, axial-flow motors are more difficult to manufacture and considerably less cost-effective. Yasa chief Tim Woolmer previously told Autocar magazine, “One unit we plan to produce weighs only 53 pounds, but produces up to 480 horsepower. With two of these motors, AMG would get nearly 1,000 hp.

The car's sleek design will further enhance its efficiency; AMG expects to employ active aerodynamics features and print a logo similar to those used on AMG's F1 cars and the “One” hypercar. The active rear spoiler is clearly visible in some of the spy shots.

AMG has extensive experience with electric power: it first tested the SLS AMG Electric Drive in 2014; with 740 hp, it was the fastest and most powerful EV on the market at the time. Since then, AMG has gathered more experience from the Formula 1 program, especially in the area of energy discharge and recovery.

AMG plans to present tuned versions of the future CLA-Class electric car, the future C-Class electric car, and the future GLC-Class electric car before the first dedicated EVs are available.
