Cadillac Introduces MagneRide 4.0: The Fastest-Responding Suspension Gets Even Faster
Cadillac announced Thursday that it will add the next-generation version of its popular MagneRide suspension damping system to select vehicles.
The new MagneRide 4.0 dampers will be standard on the 2021 CT4-V and CT5-V, and on the CT5 Sport will be included in the new V Performance Pack, which includes additional suspension upgrades and a limited slip differential.
It will also be standard on the Sport and Platinum grades of the 2021 Escalade and available on the full-size SUV's Premium Luxury grade.
The new version of MagneRide is a fourth-generation system that Cadillac says can deliver up to 45% faster damping response than the current system, which is already the fastest responding system on the market. This means that the suspension responds more quickly to changes in road conditions, resulting in longer lasting tire comfort and ground contact with the road surface.
As the name suggests, MagneRide features dampers filled with magnetorheological fluid. Magnetorheological fluids are essentially fluids whose viscosity can be adjusted by a magnetic field. The higher the viscosity, the stiffer the damping.
The Magnetride system uses electromagnets to control viscosity based on road surface information collected from wheel sensors and inertial measurement units (which measure body motion). In the latest version of the MagneRide, these measurement systems operate four times faster than the previous generation.
A new system also controls friction and temperature in the damper, which Cadillac says results in smoother, more consistent performance, especially during performance driving.
The upcoming Blackwing versions of the CT4-V and CT5-V will also no doubt come standard with the MagneRide 4.0 damper.
