Alpina Unveils Updated B5 Based on 2021 BMW 5 Series
BMW's 5 Series just received a mid-cycle update, and now Alpina has announced its own version of the updated mid-sizer.
Alpina's version is called the B5 and is available in both sedan and wagon body styles. There is also a D5 option for buyers who want the efficiency benefits of a diesel, but for obvious performance, the gasoline-powered B5 is the way to go.
Powering the B5 is BMW's familiar 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8, boosted by Alpina tuners to 613 hp and 590 hp of torque. The latter is delivered from just 2,000 rpm and accelerates the B5 sedan from 0-62 mph in 3.4 seconds; the B5 Touring Wagon's 0-62 mph time is 3.6 seconds, slightly behind. Top speeds are 205 mph for the sedan and 200 mph for the wagon.
The drive system drives all four wheels via an enhanced version of the 5 Series' eight-speed automatic transmission and a rear-biased version of BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system. To improve handling, the rear axle can be fitted with a mechanical limited slip differential.
Also contributing to handling is the standard sport suspension. This includes adjustable dampers and a slight negative camber on the front axle. Also included is speed-sensitive steering with rear-wheel steering. The standard wheels are 20 inches and have an Alpina brake system with rotors over 15 inches on each hub.
Beyond the mechanical upgrades, you get Alpina's signature styling and a cabin adorned with top-of-the-line trim options. These include Nappa leather, real wood across the dash, and a custom instrument cluster. It will also feature a custom Alpina sports steering wheel.
Alpina vehicles are sold in the U.S. through BMW, but only the top-of-the-line 7 Series-based B7 is currently available; the new X7-based XB7 will arrive later this year.
While the B5 is not expected to arrive in this country, BMW fans can look forward to an updated M5, this time expected to spawn a hardcore M5 CS variant. Elsewhere, the B5 is available for order now, with prices starting at 117,700 euros (about $133,000). Deliveries will begin in October.
