2022 Genesis GV70 Spy Shot.
The second of three crossover SUVs planned for Genesis was first spotted in prototype form.
The prototype is for a smaller SUV that is expected to be badged GV70. Consider the Korean rivals to the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.
Genesis said at its 2015 launch that it would have six different models by the end of 2020, two of which would be SUVs. However, with the booming growth of the segment, a third SUV was added to the plan in 2017.
The first Genesis SUV is already in the works in the form of the 2021 mid-sizer GV80.
The smaller GV70 will arrive in late 2020 or early next year, and rounding out the trio will be a compact SUV badged GV60. It will compete with the Audi A3 and BMW X1 and is expected to debut in 2021, although the timing is not clear.
The GV70's styling theme is similar to that of the GV80, but it features a more coupe-like profile and will likely have limited headroom in the rear. Production taillights are missing, but a split design is confirmed. This look was first previewed on the 2018 Essentia concept and is a central design theme for the Genesis lineup.
The platform underpinning the GV70 is not clear, but a likely candidate is a shared architecture borrowed from the Hyundai Tucson, which is also undergoing a redesign. Powertrains should include a four-cylinder option and possibly a plug-in hybrid.
Genesis just announced an updated G90 and new G80 and GV80 models. But there is more in the pipeline. In addition to this GV70 and the smaller GV60, there will be an updated G70, and new coupe and compact hatch models, both of which will probably be battery-powered.
