Spy shots and video of 2021 Hyundai i20 N
Hyundai's i20 subcompact hatch sold overseas is getting a makeover this year, with a sharper, more premium look, a cabin full of new technology, and a mild hybrid powertrain available.
Judging by the latest spy shots, the redesigned i20 will also introduce a new performance-oriented model developed by the Hyundai N division. This is a similar naming strategy that Hyundai N is using for the hot version of the i30 hatch sold abroad and for the Veloster here in the US.
While the spy-shot prototype may look like an early tester of the regular i20, there are some clues that this is a performance-oriented model. The uprated brake package on the larger wheels is immediately recognizable. It also features a new front mask with larger intakes and a subtle lip spoiler, as well as a lowered suspension.
The most powerful engine in the new i20 is a 1.0-liter turbo inline 3-cylinder combined with a mild hybrid system. Maximum output is 118 hp. This i20 N will likely be powered by a turbocharged inline-4 with a displacement of 1.4 or 1.6 liters, with peak output well in excess of 150 hp. Potential rivals, the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTI, have power outputs of nearly 200 hp.
The i20 N should also serve as the base for Hyundai's upcoming World Rally Championship contender. That role is currently filled by the previous generation i20. [A prototype of the Kona N has been spotted previously, and there are rumors that a Tucson N is in the works. Hyundai N has also been confirmed to be working on an independent sports car, possibly with electric drive.
