2021 Volkswagen Arteon R Spy shots and videos
The Volkswagen Arteon is approaching the midpoint of its life cycle, and the automaker plans to update the sultry fastback sedan with a number of new variants.
One of the new variants is the high-performance Arteon R, a prototype of which has been spotted. This prototype has no camouflage at all.
The Arteon R features a more aggressive front mask with enlarged intakes on both sides and a new front splitter. It also features an upgraded brake package with blue calipers and quad exhaust tips. Both are features of the Volkswagen R performance skunkworks.
Power is expected to reach just over 400 hp, produced by a new 3.0-liter V-6 turbocharger, and drive is transmitted to all four wheels via a dual-clutch transmission. This combination should result in a 0-60 mph time of around 4.0 seconds. The Arteon's current maximum output is 268 hp, generated by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4.
As mentioned earlier, the Arteon R will come along with updated versions of the entire Arteon range. Among the updates to the Arteon R are styling changes, a new dash design with a larger infotainment screen and additional connectivity options, and possibly an improved all-wheel drive system. A new shooting brake body style will also be introduced.
VW's updated Arteon is expected to be introduced later this year as a 2021 model. Sadly, we have heard that the Arteon R and Arteon Shooting Brake will not be introduced in the US. An Arteon plug-in hybrid is still in the planning stages and could still be sold locally.
