Karma will start producing electric pickup trucks and SUVs
Late last year, EV startup Karma, makers of the Revello GT long-range electric sedan, released a teaser of a pickup truck.
At the time, Karma said the pickup was a concept to demonstrate how Karma's long-range electric powertrain technology could be applied to a wide range of vehicles.
Fast forward to today, and Karma has confirmed that the pickup truck and related SUV will be produced at its plant in Moreno Valley, California. The pickup truck concept will be unveiled later this year.
Bloomberg reported the news on Monday based on comments from Karma's new chief operations officer, Kevin Pavlov. Pavlov revealed that the pickup truck and SUV will be based on a new all-wheel drive platform and will cost less than the current Revero GT, which starts at $135,000. Karma has sold about 1,000 Reveros since its launch in 2017.
While rival EV startups are all focusing on battery-electric powertrains, Karma has found a place for electric powertrains with longer range, especially in commercial vehicles. The company is also developing battery-electric vehicles, the first of which is scheduled for 2021. These vehicles will be based on a battery-electric platform that will accommodate battery sizes of up to 120 kilowatt hours (350 miles range).
