Spy shot of a 2021 Hyundai 45 EV
Hyundai has been spotted testing a prototype of a compact electric crossover SUV expected to be unveiled in 2021.
The new EV was unveiled by the 45 Concept at last year's Frankfurt International Motor Show, and judging by the spy shots, the production version will be exactly like the show car. Of course, some changes have been made to the production version, including more orthodox headlights and the addition of side mirrors and door handles.
Hyundai named the concept "45" in honor of the 45th anniversary of the Giugiaro-designed Pony Coupe Concept. In the future, Hyundai will likely give the electric SUV another name, possibly Pony.
Hyundai already offers electric vehicles in the form of the Ioniq Electric and Kona Electric battery electric vehicles, as well as the Nexo fuel cell electric vehicle, but the new SUV will be the first Hyundai vehicle built on a platform designed specifically for battery electric vehicles. It will be the first vehicle built on a platform designed specifically for battery electric vehicles. Kia and Genesis are also expected to release their models on this platform
. Unfortunately, there is no information about the SUV, including whether it will appear in the US. We can expect electric motors on each axle, and a range that will exceed the 258-mile range of the similarly sized Kona Electric.
The electric SUV's appearance comes just weeks after Hyundai and U.S. company Canoo announced plans to jointly develop a new modular platform for electric vehicles. And a few days later, Hyundai will unveil a concept hinting at the design of a future lineup of electric vehicles.
