The Renault Morphos concept based on the modular EV platform has been unveiled.

Renault is the latest automaker to unveil a modular platform for a future family of electric vehicles.

On Monday, the French automaker unveiled the new platform in the Morphoz concept, a compact crossover SUV.

The platform is dubbed CMF-EV, indicating its possible connection to the common modular family platform currently used by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance for models such as the Nissan Rogue and Renault Megane. This platform is flexible enough to support multiple body styles with varying wheelbase lengths, with wheels moved to the corners to maximize interior space.

The Morpho is available in two configurations, City and Travel, with the vehicle being able to switch between the two. The City version is equipped with a 40 kWh battery pack and a single 134 hp electric motor, while the Travel version can be fitted with an additional battery pack and boosted to 214 hp by adjusting the power electronics controls. Both variants have drive to the front wheels only.

Other technologies featured in the Morpho include an AI-based interface, semi-autonomous driver assistance features, wireless charging and 5G connectivity. The Driver Assist feature is classified as SAE Level 3 automated driving, which means the driver can take their eyes off the road in certain situations, but must be ready to regain control at a moment's notice.

Renault has not said when cars like Morpho will go on sale, but has stated that we will start to see some of this technology after 2025. And while Renault is not currently operating in the U.S., some Morphos technology, including the CMF-EV platform, will likely be used in future models from alliance partners Nissan and Mitsubishi.
