The Goodyear Recharge Tyre concept gives new meaning to the word "retreaded".
Modern tires are designed to be used and discarded. Once worn out, tires cannot be recharged. Goodyear's Recharge concept represents one possibility for extending the life of tires and adapting them to different situations.
Goodyear calls the Recharge concept a "self-healing" tire. The tire uses a biodegradable tread compound that can be refilled with special capsules. In other words, instead of replacing the entire tire, only the tread is replaced.
According to Goodyear, the tread compound is made from a "biological material" reinforced with spider silk-based fibers. This material is biodegradable, making it durable and environmentally friendly.
In addition to being easily replaceable, the tread compound is highly adaptable. Artificial intelligence can be used to create a driver profile and the composition of the rubber compound can be tailored to the individual user, according to Goodyear's concept description.
The rest of the Recharge Concept tire consists of a tall and narrow non-pneumatic carcass. Thanks to the airless design, the driver does not have to worry about maintaining tire pressure or repairing punctures.
Concept tires are becoming as numerous as concept cars. Only Goodyear produces tires that clean the air by changing shape as they roll, as well as tires that act as propellers for flying cars. However, like many other concept cars, these tires may never go into production. Goodyear has not mentioned plans to produce the Recharge, and even if permission were granted, it is unknown if this tire design would be mass-produced.
