Spy shots of the 2022 Audi RS 3.
The next-generation Audi A3 was unveiled in March and, like its predecessor, will spawn a sporty S3 model and a high-performance RS 3 variant.
A prototype of the new RS 3 was first spotted in sedan form, revealing many hints of the new compact car. A prototype of the RS 3 Sportback hatchback is also being tested.
Both generations of the new A3 utilize Volkswagen Group's MQB platform and represent significant updates to the current generation rather than an actual redesign. This applies to the new RS 3 as well.
It is expected that the 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder turbo engine will still be used as the powertrain, but its output could exceed the current model's 400 hp, while Mercedes-AMG's latest compact car now develops 416 hp. A dual-clutch transmission and a rear-wheel-drive all-wheel-drive system should also be included.
That this is an RS 3 prototype can be judged by the enlarged air intakes at the front, widened wheel arches, huge rims and tires, and the distinctive oval exhaust at the rear.
Although the interior is not visible in any of the images, the previous generation RS 3 had body-hugging sport seats and a flat-bottomed steering wheel in front of the driver.
It is also known that the new A3 will feature a digital instrument cluster, a large touchscreen infotainment system that recognizes hand typed text and responds to commands in a natural speech-like manner, and a color head-up display. The new RS 3 may also feature a performance data recorder.
The new A3 is expected to be introduced in the U.S. later this year as a 2021 model, with the RS 3 likely to arrive six months to a year later, i.e. in 2022.
Potential competitors for the RS 3 include the new AMG 45 Series, BMW M2, and possibly the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing.
