Get a taste of the sound of Gordon Murray's new V12 supercar engine in the teaser video.
Gordon Murray was the designer of many championship-winning Formula One cars and the iconic McLaren F1 supercar. He is currently working on a new car that is being hailed as the latest and greatest "analog" supercar.
The new car, dubbed the T50, will be unveiled in May, and Gordon Murray shows it off in a new video. The video shows some of the development of the V12 engine that will power the car.
The engine is being developed by Cosworth and was recently tested on a three-cylinder mule at high revs. The impressive sound produced by this mule shows it to be only a quarter of the total sound of the engine.
Murray claims that the finished engine spins up to 12,100 rpm. This figure is about 1,000 rpm higher than the revs promised by Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG for their Valkyrie and One hypercars respectively.
It is also known that the engine will have a displacement of 3.9 liters, a narrow 65-degree cylinder block, a dry sump lubrication system, a peak output of 650 hp, and a maximum torque of 332 lb-ft. The T50 will drive only the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.
The engine also has a mild hybrid configuration, in this case with a 48-volt motor-generator that can temporarily add 30 hp. Thanks to the supercharger system, the T50's peak power output can be increased to around 700 hp.
Other impressive features of the car include a rear fan that creates downforce and a lightweight design. This results in a weight of only 2,160 kg, which is one-third lighter than most supercars on the market.
The first T50s should go on sale in early 2022, with only 100 cars (and possibly 25 track versions) to be built for road use. The good news is that the T50 is only the first model under the new Gordon Murray Automotive brand, which specializes in low-volume production cars.
