2021 Hyundai i20 N Spy shot.
Hyundai's i20 subcompact hatchback sold overseas has undergone a makeover this year, with a sharper, more premium look, an interior packed with new technology and a lightweight hybrid powertrain.
Judging by the latest spy shots, the updated i20 will also introduce a new performance-oriented model developed by Hyundai's N division. A similar naming strategy is used by Hyundai N for the hot version of the i30 hatchback sold overseas and the Veloster in the US.
The photographed prototype may look like an early tester of the regular i20, but there are several indications that this is a performance-oriented model. What immediately catches the eye is the reinforced brake package fitted to the larger wheels. The model also features a new front end with larger air intakes and a subtle lip spoiler, as well as a lowered suspension.
The most powerful engine of the new i20 is a 1.0-liter inline three-cylinder turbo engine combined with a mild hybrid system. Maximum output is 118 hp. The i20 N is likely to be powered by a 1.4 or 1.6 liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with peak output well in excess of 150 hp. Potential competitors such as the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTI have a power output of around 200 hp.
The i20 N is also expected to form the basis for Hyundai's next World Rally Championship entrant. The previous generation i20 currently fulfills this role. [A prototype of the Kona N was previously spotted, and there are also rumors of an upcoming Tucson N. It has also been confirmed that Hyundai N is working on an independent sports car, possibly with electric drive.
