The 2021 Polestar 2, which will be priced around $60,000 at launch, is cheaper than expected.

When the Polestar 2 electric fastback goes on sale this summer, it will cost less than the company expected. Polestar says the Launch Edition will cost $59,900 plus an undisclosed shipping cost, which is $3,000 less than previously estimated.

Polestar 2 is subject to state and federal tax credits and rebates, which could total $10,000 or more depending on location.

According to colleagues at Green Car Reports, a cheaper model will be available in a year and will cost about $45,000.

Polestar has also announced option prices for the 2021 model year. The Performance Pack costs $5,000, but Polestar did not disclose what that equipment includes. Nappa leather interior trim will cost $4,000, 20-inch alloy wheels will cost $1,200, and special paint colors will cost $1,200.

The second Polestar 2 will be the first full-fledged EV from Volvo's Performance EV subsidiary brand. The first Polestar 1 combines two electric motors and a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged inline four-cylinder engine developing 619 hp.

The second Polestar 2 has two electric motors, one on each axle, for all-wheel drive, combined with a 78 kWh battery pack, develops 408 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque, and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes less than five seconds, according to Polestar. The car is based on the compact modular architecture used in the Volvo XC40.

Inside, the Polestar 2 debuts an Android-based infotainment system with voice commands via Google Assistant, Google Maps showing where the EV is charging, and the ability to download apps via the Google App store. The system is equipped with.

Production of the Polestar 2 began on March 24 at a factory in Luqiao, China, despite a coronavirus outbreak. Deliveries of the first cars to U.S. customers will be made through the summer. The cars will be available nationwide, and Polestar plans to announce leasing options in the near future.

Polestar recently unveiled the "Precept" concept car, which sets the brand's design direction.
