Spy shots of the 2022 BMW X2.
The BMW X2 compact crossover combines compact dimensions with a high stance and high ground clearance, making it a great alternative to premium hatchbacks sold overseas, although it's only recently joined BMW's lineup in 2018, An updated version is coming soon that will make the X2 even more appealing.
An updated X2 prototype has been spotted, hinting at some of the visual changes we can expect. The covers should be available during 2021 and most likely as a 2022 model.
The prototype features headlights with new internals. The grille is also largely covered, suggesting a new design. More advanced prototypes are likely to have additional changes such as a modified rear end and new taillight internals.
Changes to the interior are also likely. It is likely to feature a more modern dashboard design, similar to that seen on the latest 1 Series hatchbacks and the new 2 Series Gran Coupe. It integrates a digital instrument cluster with a large infotainment screen above the center dash.
In the U.S., the X2 is currently offered in the X2 xDrive28i and X2 M35i trims, powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engine with 228 and 302 hp, respectively. A new entry-level front-wheel-drive model has yet to be ruled out, but that's unlikely to change with the release of the updated model. In that case, the price of the X2 may drop from the current $39,395. There are also plans to add the plug-in hybrid option that was added to the related X1 last year, but as with the X1, it is unlikely to be offered on the X2 sold in the U.S.
There have also been rumors of a convertible X2, but apparently such a body option is no longer planned, at least for this generation of BMW compact crossovers.
