PIASTRY wins first F1 race in Hungary in 2024

The 13th round of the 2024 Formula One World Championship, the Hungarian Grand Prix, was won by McLaren's Oscar Piatri on Sunday.

McLaren teammate Lando Norris handed over the lead to Piastri due to team orders, finishing in second place by two seconds, with Mercedes-Benz AMG's Lewis Hamilton in third place.

Norris started the Hungaroring race from pole position and took the top grid spot alongside Piastri. Behind him were Red Bull Racing champion Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz. Norris, Piastri, and Verstappen entered turn 1 almost side-by-side, with Piastri taking the lead and Verstappen going off course but restarting in front of Norris. Verstappen then rejoined the field to avoid a penalty.

Piastri then led for most of the race, but Norris pitted first during the second pit stop. As a result, Norris was ordered by his team to give the lead back to Piastri, and Piastri surrendered the lead two laps from the end

.

As a result, Piastri crossed the finish line untouched to take his first Grand Prix win. The young Australian driver had also won the sprint race at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished fourth in the Hungarian Grand Prix, while Verstappen dropped to fifth after contact with Hamilton in the closing laps. Both drivers were battling for third place when Verstappen locked both fronts entering turn 1 and Hamilton's front tire made contact with the rear tire of Verstappen's car. It was noted that Hamilton had moved under braking, but the stewards ruled that no further action would be taken.

After this weekend, Verstappen remains in first place in the 2024 drivers' championship with 265 points. Norris is second with 189 points and Leclerc is third with 162 points. Red Bull leads the constructors' championship with 389 points. McLaren is second with 338 points and Ferrari is third with 322 points.

The next race is scheduled for this weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix.
