Imagine a desolate desert road of sun-scorched earth with loose rocks rising to the sun from a dry lake bed, a cloud of dust filling the rearview mirror like a storm, now the creosote bushes turn into themselves, a track ripping past at near three-digit speeds. In this Mad Maxian scenario, the truck brakes hard and thunders hard to the left, bounces over the balm, slides laterally, shatters into a deep sandy earth rut, hoops over the hoop, and then throws downhill, creosote is leaning and waving like a rally spectator prickly cactus. 

With the 2024 Ford F-150Raptor R, it's easy to imagine this unlikely reality.Looking back on it, I need to check the notes, check the phone, check my head and make sure it's really real. 

The Raptor R is a crazy machine, an engineering marvel that dances over desert terrain at high speed, a frenetic wheel trip pumping like a 720-horsepower V-8 piston, but the cabin is oddly stationary. There is no real head bobbing or back cracking - humans go in so many directions at once, so they should not be comfortable.

I was expecting an attack on dentistry and chiropractic during my three-hour desert thrashing a full-size factory truck near the Hammer King's off-road course in Johnson Valley. Instead, the Raptor R was able to keep the cabin stable enough to run without biting the tongue when it wasn't in the mouth. 

All of the 2024 Ford F-150s have benefited from a mid-cycle refresh that digitally upgrades the interior with a 12.0-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.0-inch touchscreen. Don't worry, Ford still employs a large dial for driving mode, traction assist, volume, tuning, and climate control. 

The change in appearance is modest but noteworthy. The new wraparound grille accommodates a C-shaped LED headlight that curves into the fender and is slightly modified. Modular bumpers available hide active grille shutters in some models and hang below, allowing the use of factory-installed warning winches (at a rating of 12,000 pounds for raptors) or rigid LED light bars and other accessories. It has an end cap that exposes more tires — Raptor R's 37-inch BFGoodrich K02S.

In off-road mode, the small fog light lights alternately based on the position of the wheel, so if you are turning right, the right fog light illuminates the road. The taillight design is not available in the Yo Raptor R for Ford's available pro-access two-way tailgate with a center door that bends like an elbow and swings open to the passenger side

The Raptor R has benefited from numerous improvements and the 5.2-liter supercharged V-8 is a great way to get started. It is the best place. The 3.5 generation Raptor R now has 720hp and 640lb-ft of torque up from 700hp. The 2024 Raptor still uses a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 and produces 450 hp and 510lb-ft. The position sensors on each wheel, monitored by a control module, determine how they are driving and critically what they are driving. Based on this, a more responsive attenuation is obtained. Combine this with a cast NTN half shaft to 35 degrees (on the inner shaft; the outer shaft is 45 degrees), it is a 2.5 degree upgrade and with an extra half inch of wheel travel it brings it to 13.5 inches in the front and 14 inches in the back. Tighter controlled wheel travel leads to more confidence in speed. 

This is especially important for those who have never cheated at close to three-digit speeds on a full technical off-road course with a hard left over balm, and descending on a series of different rollicking whoops. A cloud of dust cleared well from my ascent, and I could see a meandering rally course on the dry seabed below. 

To navigate the twists and turns, Ford helped speed up the steering ratio from 17.2:1 to 16:1. Even if the course tried to jerk the wheel away, it quickly re-centered and I was better able to whip the edge around to the next turn with a measured quarter turn of the wheel.

The lateral balance created by all these upgrades gave me confidence that exceeded my ability. By the 3rd lap to desert height and autocross low, I kept getting better, reaching higher speeds, crossing boundaries from obscure vertices, grinning like a madman, and the missing teeth damned. 

2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R

This is the painful part. At Destination112,220, destination1,995, including destination fees, the 2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R will cost 3 Ford F-31,895 more than the 2024 Ford F-150 Raptor. You can almost get the F-150XL because of that price difference.
