There may not be a repeat of the BMW Z4.

The BMW Z4 will end with the current model, Car and Driver reported Wednesday.

There will also be no fixed-roof special edition to mark the end of the current model, despite BMW's presentation of such a concept model at the 2023 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy, the report said.

The Z4 is now in its third generation. The first generation was introduced in 2003 as a direct successor to the similar Z3, made famous by its appearance in the 1995 James Bond film "GoldenEye."

The current Z4 has been on sale since 2018 and was co-developed with the current Toyota Supra, which may have helped justify the development and sales costs; it received an update two years ago, and earlier this year BMW finally added a manual transmission option.

Sports cars don't tend to sell well, but sales of the Z4 have been particularly low. Last year, BMW sold just 1,883 units in the U.S., a record year for this market.

Another poor seller for BMW is the 8 Series, with Car and Driver reporting that the coupe and convertible versions are also likely to be discontinued after the current generation. However, the four-door Gran Coupe will reportedly remain. Total sales of all 8 Series body styles in the U.S. last year were 5,751 units, with the Gran Coupe accounting for the bulk of those sales.

Earlier rumors suggested that the upcoming 8 Series Gran Coupe would move into the 7 Series family, while the upcoming 4 Series family would be positioned higher by adopting the 6 Series nameplate.

BMW's future coupe and convertible models will likely also have electric car options.
