Ford prepares rallycross-inspired Mustang Mach-E for the road

Get ready for the new performance-oriented Ford Mustang Mach-E in showrooms soon.

Ford unveiled a Mustang Mach-E Rally prototype at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK on Friday, confirming that orders will begin this fall.

Rally driver Ott Tanak was on hand for the debut, driving the prototype up the Goodwood hill climb course. He is currently competing in the World Rally Championship in a rally car based on the Ford Puma subcompact crossover.

"The Mustang Mach E takes the freedom and fun of the Mustang and frees it from emissions," Darren Palmer, head of the electric vehicle program for Ford's Model E division, said in a statement. With the Mustang Mach E Rally, we now offer our customers the freedom to leave the asphalt and venture off the beaten path."

Ford is withholding details until closer to market launch, but says the car is inspired by rally cars that compete in rallycross. Ford has been a regular participant in rallycross competitions for many years, usually using a rally car based on the Fiesta, a subcompact hatchback.

Judging from the prototype, the Mustang Mach E Rallye will feature a unique front mask and wheel design as well as an aerodynamic package that includes a front splitter and oversized roof spoiler. In addition, the grille panel will be fitted with driving lights and the cabin will feature sport seats.

Given the emphasis on performance, the Mustang Mach-E Rally will likely feature the most powerful powertrain configuration offered in the Mustang Mach-E. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain currently available in the "GT Performance" grade has a maximum output of 480 hp.

The chassis will also likely receive some upgrades, including the possibility of a slight increase in ride height due to the need for off-road capability.
