Polestar offers best look yet at 5 sedan
Polestar's next model, the 5 sedan, made its camouflaged prototype debut at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK this week
The Polestar 5 is a production version of the 2020 Precept concept car and will make its world debut in 2024. It will likely hit U.S. showrooms the following year as a 2026 model.
In addition to the 5 prototype, the 2024 Polestar 3 SUV debuted at Goodwood in 2022. The same issue affected Volvo's EX90 SUV, which shares a platform with the 3
. According to Polestar, this platform is designed with bonded aluminum and boasts better torsional rigidity than some two-door sports cars and some supercars.
As for performance, Polestar says it is targeting up to 884 hp from its dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain. Polestar has also confirmed an 800-volt electric architecture that will allow for fast charging. Battery capacity and range have not been disclosed.
Such performance could make the 5 a competitor to high-end versions of the Porsche Taycan, Audi E-Tron GT, and Tesla Model S.
The 5's design is very similar to the Precept concept. However, there are differences: the 5 does away with the concept's coach-style rear doors in favor of conventional doors. It also uses conventional side mirrors instead of stalk-mounted cameras. The design was likely revealed in patent drawings released last year.
Before the 5 arrives, Polestar will begin selling compact crossovers called the 3 and 4. Paulstar is also developing a 6 roadster, scheduled for release in 2026, and a mysterious model dubbed the 7, which will appear around 2027.
