2024 Toyota GR86 with Trueno Edition and Performance Package

In 2024, the Toyota GR86 will enter its model year with a new performance package and special editions.

In 2024, a Trueno Edition will join the sports coupe lineup to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the car that inspired the GR86: from 1984 to 1987, it was sold in Japan as the Sprinter Trueno and in the US as the Corolla Sport GT- S, and was the sportiest version of the rear-wheel-drive Toyota AE86 platform.

Although technically an economy car rather than a sports car, the AE86 was prized by enthusiasts for its nimble handling, tunable engine, and affordable price. The AE86 Sprinter Trueno also helped popularize drifting through the manga and anime "Initial D." Hence the GR86 "86."

The Trueno Edition is based on the premium grade of the GR86 and reproduces the two-tone color scheme that characterized the AE86 in the 1980s, with a black hood, black door handles, mirror caps, side graphics, and black spoiler in white or red paint. This special edition also comes with black metallic 18-inch wheels.

The Trueno Edition also features suede seats with red leather trim, red stitching on the shifter boot and steering wheel, and an eight-speaker audio system.

A new performance package, standard on the Trueno Edition and optional on other 2024 GR86 models, adds ZF Sachs dampers and Brembo brakes. It can also be retrofitted to the 2022 or 2023 GR86 with 18-inch wheels.

The only engine is a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter flat-4 that produces 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. This power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, with 0-60 mph times of 6.1 seconds for the manual and 6.6 seconds for the automatic. A Torsen limited-slip differential is standard.

Driver-assist features are now available for the manual transmission as well as the automatic. These include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. As a twin to the Subaru BRZ, the GR86 uses Subaru's camera-based safety suite.

Production of the 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition will be limited to 860 units for the U.S. market (like the 2023 special edition), with deliveries expected to begin this winter; pricing for all 2024 GR86 models will be revealed at a later date.
