Lamborghini Urus to be a hybrid-only vehicle in 2024

According to a recent Autocar report, the Lamborghini Urus will lose its non-electric V-8 powertrain in 2024 and go all-electric in 2029.

The Urus Plug-in Hybrid will keep the current twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 but add electric assist, and will be Lamborghini's second plug-in hybrid next year after the Revuelto, which will replace the Aventador, according to Stephan CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Autocar in an interview.

A prototype of the Urus plug-in hybrid has already been seen testing, but this is the first time Lamborghini has confirmed that it will discontinue its non-hybrid powertrain option by adding electric assist to its V-8 engine, plug-in hybrid should make it the most powerful Urus ever. Currently, the lineup has a maximum output of 657 hp.

Lamborghini's most popular model, the Urus, was launched in 2018 as a 2019 model and updated to Urus S specifications last year. A sportier Urus Performante also joined the lineup last year.

The electric Urus, Lamborghini's second EV, will be presented in 2028 as a 2+2 grand tourer. Representing a new fourth model line without a direct predecessor, it will reportedly have a comfortable rear seat and a target range of 300 miles. When the all-electric powertrain arrives, Lamborghini plans to use it in more luxurious models for the time being, building electric supercars only when absolutely necessary for regulatory reasons.

In the meantime, Lamborghini plans to add a Revuelto variant, as well as a successor to the Huracan. Lamborghini will also reconfigure its factory in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, marking the first time that two Lamborghini models will share the same assembly line.
