2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV triples grade, range projected at 314 miles

Starting with the 2024 model year, GMC Hummer EV buyers will have a choice of SUV body styles offered in the Edition 1 and 3X grades.

Both grades have the same powertrain, but the Hummer EV Edition 1 SUV is a limited edition model with special features as standard and is available in an exclusive Moonshot Green matte paint finish. Prices start at $105,595. Pricing for the Hummer EV 3X SUV starts at $100,395. Both include destination.

In both cases, the powertrain is a three-motor all-wheel drive (one motor in the front and two in the rear) with maximum output of 830 hp and 0-60 mph acceleration in approximately 3.5 seconds when using launch control mode. This is below the GMC Hummer EV pickup's highest performance rating of 1,000 hp, or 0-60 mph acceleration in 3 seconds.

The Hummer EV SUV's wheelbase is 126.7 inches, 8.9 inches shorter than the pickup's wheelbase; the SUV also has a tight turning circle of 35.4 feet, thanks in part to rear-wheel steering. For fans of the pickup's diagonal driving feature, Club Walk, GMC has included it in the SUV as well.

The downside of the short wheelbase is that the SUV's battery is smaller than that of the pickup. As a result, the SUV's maximum range is estimated at 314 miles versus the pickup's 355 miles. These figures are based on standard 22-inch wheels and 35-inch all-terrain tires; adding the Extreme Off-Road package with 18-inch wheels and 35-inch mud-terrain tires reduces the SUV's range to 298 miles and the pickup's to 329 miles, which drops to 329 miles. All ranges are GMC estimates.

In terms of towing capacity, the SUV has a maximum rating of 7,500 pounds both standard and with the Extreme Off-Road Package. The towing capacity of the pickup is 8,500 lbs. in standard condition and 7,500 lbs. with the Extreme Off-Road Package.

Production of the SUV and pickup is taking place at General Motors' Factory Zero plant near Detroit; GMC has closed the reservation process to build vehicles for customers who have changed their reservations to orders, and the automaker has not indicated when it will resume .

Waiting customers can expect the less expensive 2X and 2 grades of the SUV. The timing of these less expensive grades is unknown.
