Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 Electric Drag Racer Debuts

Electric cars are known to be fast in a straight line, and one of the fastest is the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400.

Announced for 2020, this electric drag racer has more than 1,500 horsepower at the wheels, or enough power to set the current full-body EV quarter-mile record of 8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph.

Ford is currently attempting to break this record with the more extreme Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800.

Like the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, the new drag racer is based on the previous generation Mustang. Both have the same powertrain layout, in this case with four electric motors on the rear axle, each with its own inverter.

Ford has not revealed whether there will be more power, but has confirmed that it will have a new transmission and a redesigned battery that is lighter than before. Given the power of the Cobra Jet 1400, the Super Cobra Jet 1800 could have over 1,800 horsepower. It also has improved suspension geometry and larger Mickey Thompson drag radial tires.

Ford worked with electric racing specialist MLe Racecar to develop the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800. The team will also attempt to set the fastest 0-60 mph record with an EV and the fastest 0-60 mph record with a two-wheel-drive EV,

and the team is also working with the Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, which will be the fastest EV ever to drive a two-wheel-drive car.

Ford is working with NHRA organizers to find ways to bring electrification to professional drag racing. Given the performance already demonstrated by the previous generation Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, it seems only a matter of time.

The company is not the only automaker exploring electric dragsters: in 2019, Chevrolet's eCOPO Camaro came close to placing ninth in driving, but its performance potential was never truly exploited.
