Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 Electric Drag Racer scheduled for April 13
Ford posted a video teaser on social media last week of a Mustang-based drag racer scheduled for release on April 13.
A sticker on the rear of the car identifies it as a Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, and the sound the vehicle makes indicates that the powertrain is electric. In a social media post, Ford also included the tag "upgraded" with the video.
Clues point to a more powerful successor to the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 to be unveiled in 2020. The car was a one-off prototype designed to explore the potential of electric powertrains in the drag racing world. It produced 1,502 hp at the wheels at its peak, enough power to go 168 mph for a quarter-mile in 8.27 seconds.
Ford has since introduced a redesigned Mustang, and it appears that the new car will feature its own electric drag racer. Given that Ford is calling this new drag racer the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, it is likely to be over 1,800 horsepower.
Ford is working with NHRA organizers to find a way to bring electrification to professional drag racing. Given the performance that the previous generation Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 has already shown, it is only a matter of time.
Ford is not the only automaker exploring electric dragsters; in 2019, Chevrolet's eCOPO Camaro came close to the 9-second mark in driving, but its performance potential was never truly exploited. Let the electric drag wars begin.
