Rivian installs a Maxpack battery on an R1S SUV with 390 miles on it
Rivian has made its largest battery, a 180 kwh unit named Max Pack, available for the first time in the R1S SUV.
Previously limited to the R1T pickup truck, the Max Pack battery can now be ordered for the R1S for fall delivery.
Like the R1T, Max Pack on the R1S can only be configured with a dual motor powertrain; the R1S is available with a quad motor powertrain, but this option is only offered with the 135 kwh Large Pack battery.
Rivian has stated that it plans to make the Max Pack available with an enhanced quad motor powertrain at a later date, but for now only the R1T with this configuration is mentioned.
The company said it will provide an update on how customers who have reserved an R1S can update to the Max Pack; pricing for the Max Pack for the R1S has not been disclosed, but the company said customers who order this battery option can expect up to 390 miles on the R1S and up to 400 miles of range, the company said.
The range for the R1S with the Large Pack is said to be 340 miles (350 miles for the R1T), and 260 miles (270 miles for the R1T) with the 105 kwh Standard Pack.
Rivian is also preparing performance upgrades for the R1S and R1T dual-motor powertrains. With software adjustments, the power output is expected to increase to approximately 700 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque, compared to the current power rating of 600 hp and 600 lb-ft. The upgrade will reduce the dual-motor model's 0-60 mph time from 4.5 seconds to 3.5 seconds, Livian said.
In an investor update on Tuesday, Rivian said it could produce 24,337 cars in 2022. Rivian said that these problems would continue through 2023, but that it expected production to more than double to 50,000 units that year.
