AC introduced the state-of-the-art Cobra for the first time.

AC Cars is back in the Cobra game, this time with a clean-sheet design to be unveiled in April.

In advance of the debut, the company is offering computer-generated images that give fans clues as to what is to come.

Founded in 1901, AC Cars is one of the oldest car companies in the U.K. and the one that built the original Ace sports car that Carroll Shelby injected V-8 power into to create the legendary Shelby Cobra in 1962. The Shelby is sold in some markets as the AC Cobra, and more recently AC has begun producing battery-powered replicas.

The new car, dubbed the AC Cobra GT Roadster, may look like the original, but it was developed from scratch using modern technology and engineering processes. For example, it features an extruded aluminum chassis and a body made of carbon composite, while the suspension was developed in collaboration with a professional racing team.

The Cobra GT Roadster is larger than the original Cobra. The wheelbase was 101 inches, or about 11 inches longer than the original, but the overall length only increased by 4.3 inches, for a total of 166 inches. The track width has also been increased, providing both improved handling and a tougher stance.

It also comes with modern comfort features such as power windows, automatic climate control, and an infotainment system with navigation; AC also offers a long list of options, including carbon fiber seats, leather trim, and a removable hard top.

Power comes from a Ford 5.0-liter V-8 mated to a 6-speed manual or 10-speed automatic. Maximum power output is 654 hp and maximum torque is 575 lb-ft. Curb weight is expected to be around 3,300 pounds, and with that much power, AC says the 0-60 mph time will be about 3.4 seconds. Top speed is about 172 mph (157 km/h).

AC has not yet confirmed the price, but it is expected to be about 285,000 British pounds (about $342,000). Ordering has already begun, with first deliveries scheduled for 2024. Production will be limited, AC said.
