Lamborghini Invencible and Autentica mark the end of the pure V12 era

Lamborghini has unveiled two one-off supercars that will go down in history, at least as far as road cars are concerned, as the last supercars to be powered exclusively by V12 engines.

The new Invincible Coupe and Outentica Roadster, both unveiled Monday, are based on Lamborghini's Aventador supercar, which went out of production last September.

Lamborghini is weeks away from unveiling the Aventador's successor, which will feature a newly developed V-12 engine but augment it with plug-in hybrid technology. Lamborghini has revealed that it plans to electrify its full lineup as early as the end of 2024. Lamborghini's EV will be the fourth model line to be introduced in the second half of the decade.

The Invencible and Autentica will be powered by the 6.5-liter V12 engine familiar from the Aventador. This engine has been tuned to produce a maximum output of 769 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque. This engine is the second V12 engine in Lamborghini's 60-year history.

The engine is mounted in the rear in the usual longitudinal configuration, but the designers dressed up the engine cover with hexagonal vents inspired by the design of Lamborghini's 2010 Sesto Elemento concept. The homage to this concept, which focuses on lightweight construction, signifies one of Lamborghini's design tenets: lightness. Similarly, the Invencible and Autentica feature aerodynamic elements inspired by the designs seen on the 2007 Reventon and 2013 Veneno.

The interior design of both cars is quite modest in relation to their bold exteriors. Carbon fiber is used throughout, and certain elements, such as air vents, were created using 3D printing. Lamborghini involved the customer from the very beginning of the project, right down to the final design.

Note that while Lamborghini is moving toward electric powertrains and eventually full electric powertrains, it has not ruled out the possibility of offering a dedicated circuit car with only a gas engine in the future. This has already been confirmed with cars like the 2020 Essenza SCV12.
