Ant Anstead and Hiroyuki Sanada Learn Behind the Scenes of the Mazda 2024 CX-90
Mazda is preparing to unveil its flagship SUV later this month in the form of the 2024 CX-90.
Recently, renowned mechanic Ant Anstead and actor and martial arts master Hiroyuki Sanada were invited to check out the SUV and learn about the many motivations behind its design, which Mazda highlighted in a teaser video released on Thursday.
The video showcases many of the CX-90's looks. Artisan Red is a new color that Mazda has limited to vehicles in its Large Product Group. This group also includes the CX-60 compact crossover sold overseas and will eventually include the CX-70 crossover sold in the US.
All vehicles in the Large Product Group are based on Mazda's newly developed rear-wheel drive platform with longitudinally mounted engine. The CX-90 will also be powered by Mazda's new 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six engine with 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. the CX-90 will also feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but Mazda has not yet Mazda has not yet revealed details.
The video also confirms that the CX-90 will add Mazda's Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) system, introduced in the 2022 MX-5 Miata, an electronic control feature designed to improve cornering stability. Similar to a brake-based torque vectoring system, KPC intelligently applies braking force to reduce body roll and improve grip in corners.
The CX-90 will go on sale in the spring. It is confirmed to be larger than previous Mazda vehicles, including the 199.4-inch-long CX-9. However, it is not clear whether the CX-90 will replace the CX-9 or be a premium alternative. Both SUVs may remain in the lineup, as Mazda is selling the new CX-50 alongside the old CX-5.
