Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 63 Motorsport Collector's Edition gets a Petronas F1 paint job
Mercedes-Benz this week unveiled a special edition of the AMG SL 63 in an F1-inspired livery.
Limited to 100 units worldwide, the SL 63 Motorsports Collector's Edition replicates the look of Mercedes' W13 E Performance F1 car used during the 2022 Formula 1 season, with silver paint fading to black at the rear of the car.
The front mask, side sills, rear diffuser, and 21-inch wheels feature splashes of green to represent Petronas, the Malaysian state-owned oil company that is the title sponsor of the Mercedes F1 team. The Mercedes silver and Petronas green combination has been used by Mercedes factory teams since the car's debut in 2010, except for a period when the color scheme was temporarily changed to an all-black livery.
It also includes the AMG Aerodynamics Package, with larger front and rear flicks, a larger rear diffuser, and underbody changes; the AMG Night Package and AMG Night Package II are also included, with blacked-out trim pieces added.
Inside, the Motorsport Collector's Edition will feature a black Nappa leather and microfiber combination interior with red or yellow stitching and a heated steering wheel with carbon fiber trim. This special edition is also considerably better equipped, with a Burmester audio system, a heads-up display, and an AMG Track Pace data logger for circuit driving.
No mechanical changes were reported; the SL 63 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine that produces 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission. Mercedes estimates a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 196 mph.
While Mercedes has enjoyed much success in Formula One over the past few years, the Motorsports Collector's Edition comes at a slow time for the team. In 2022, the first year of a major rule change that reset the design of the car, performance dropped dramatically and Mercedes found itself behind new leader Red Bull Racing.
