Google's Android Auto gets a redesign

Google's Android Auto interface has become the choice of many drivers. Like its rival Apple CarPlay interface, Android Auto projects familiar smartphone apps onto the car's infotainment system for a more straightforward experience. That Android Auto has been updated.

The update, announced at CES, brings a fresh design and a handful of new features to Android Auto, which launched in 2014 and received its last major facelift in 2019.

The new design now rolling out to users moves Google Maps closer to the driver, making it easier to see at a glance. Other changes include a new media card intended to display album art more legibly and a quick-launch feature for frequently used apps.

In addition to the appearance changes, several new features have been added to Android Auto: Google Assistant now offers suggestions for missed call reminders, shared arrival times, and the ability to pull up music and podcasts. A progress bar has also been added, allowing users to skip to another song or episode.

On-screen shortcuts have also been added for replying to messages and calling favorite contacts; Google Pixel and Samsung smartphone users can now make calls over WhatsApp through Android Auto.

In addition to the Android Auto update, Google is also expanding the availability of its Digital Key feature, which allows users to use their smartphones instead of their key fobs. Car owners can now share their digital keys with Pixel and iPhone users, allowing others to borrow their cars. Several automakers offer variations of this feature, but Google's version only works with BMWs.

In addition, more automakers are adopting the Google built-in feature in their infotainment systems, allowing drivers to use Google's apps without having to plug in their smartphones. 2023 Honda Accord, Volvo, and Polestar. It is the latest model to add Google Built-In, following some models.

New Google Built-In features will include HD maps, which will be available on the 2024 Volvo EX90 and 2024 Polestar 3 electric SUVs. Drivers will also be able to watch YouTube videos on their car screens while parked. Google also plans to expand its roster of car brands with Google built-ins, with Ford and Lincoln to be added in late 2023.
