Hyundai Home Energy Ecosystem Launches in 16 States
Hyundai Home is a coordinated home energy ecosystem that bundles EV charging, solar power, and battery storage.
At the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai announced that Hyundai Home is now available through dealers in 16 states. The automaker also announced a partnership with Electrum to create a "one-stop online marketplace" for customers to procure home charging stations, solar panels, and energy storage systems and find installers.
When a customer selects a home charging station and additional solar energy storage hardware, they will receive three installation bids from Electrum's network of electrical contractors. Electrum will also provide an "energy advisor" to guide the customer through the process.
These services will help drivers get more out of their EVs. Charging EVs from home solar installations would reduce the carbon footprint of EVs while reducing dependence on the power grid. Energy storage maximizes the use of solar power by capturing excess energy and storing it for times when the sun is not shining.
Hyundai EVs based on the company's E-GMP platform, including the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, also support bi-directional charging and, like the Ford F-150 Lightning's home integration system, can discharge power when needed to help households could potentially be able to do the same. Hyundai, however, has not confirmed whether it will be part of Hyundai Home's plans.
Hyundai Home also fits with the automaker's aspiration to become a "smart mobility solution provider" that goes beyond manufacturing and selling cars. General Motors (GM) has similar goals with its new GM Energy division, which will oversee the company's EV-focused charging and energy-related services.
