Bugatti to the last 100 Chiron
Production of the Bugatti Chiron has come to an end, leaving just 100 units left before the supercar disappears.
When the Bugatti Chiron was unveiled in 2016, production of the hypercar was capped at 500 units; the 400th Chiron was recently completed and handed over to its owner at Bugatti's factory in Molsheim, France, the automaker announced Thursday.
The car is a Chiron Super Sport, with exposed carbon fiber bodywork colored dark green. The interior is two-tone green and beluga black, with black anodized metal trim and an optional Sky View glass roof.
The Super Sport is one of many Chiron variants that have appeared since production began. It is derived from the Chiron Supersport 300+, which, in prototype form, broke the 300 km/h barrier for production cars in 2019. The Supersport has a more luxurious, more forgiving chassis and a slightly more modest top speed of "only" 273 mph.
The quad-turbo 8.0-liter W-16 engine, shared with the other Chiron models, is tuned to produce 1,578 hp instead of the standard 1,480 hp. Bugatti said the engine will live on after the Chiron in two special editions, the Mistral Roadster and the Boride Hypercar, which is designed for circuit driving.
The Mistral, which was unveiled in August and will be limited to 100 units, is confirmed to be the last model to feature this powerful motor. Bugatti does not intend to go down the electrification route next, but the next hypercar will feature some form of electrification.
Bugatti began deliveries of the Chiron in 2017; as of July 2019, Bugatti had built 200 Chirons, with 250 to be built in 2020, marking the halfway point in the Chiron's life cycle; the 300th Chiron was delivered in 2021, so at this pace At this rate, it will take Bugatti at least a year to deliver the last car. Bugatti announced in January that the Chiron had sold out.
As for what comes next, Bugatti initially said it would begin developing a successor to the Chiron in 2019. However, such a successor will now be developed as part of a new Bugatti Rimac venture, under the supervision of Rimac CEO Mate Rimac.
