GM reportedly considering mid-size Hummer

At about 217 inches long and more than 9,000 pounds of vehicle weight, the GMC Hummer EV electric pickup truck is too big for many people.

It turns out that a smaller, mid-size Hummer pickup could be in the pipeline, Bloomberg reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to these sources, the mid-size Hummer is still in the design phase and has not been approved for production.

The smaller Hummer has a better chance of reaching production, as it could lead to sales outside the U.S., especially in Europe, where GM plans to return with a dedicated EV portfolio.

GMC spokesman Mikhail Farah declined to comment to Bloomberg.

The full-size Hummer EV has proven to be a huge success, despite currently costing over $100,000 (a lower-priced variant is planned); in September, GMC closed pre-orders for the Hummer EV and a related Hummer SUV due out next year.

According to Bloomberg, production is still bottlenecked by battery supply, but is expected to ramp up once the Ohio battery plant comes on line later this year; as of September 30, fewer than 800 Hummer EVs had been delivered.

A smaller Hummer would not be a surprise, as Hummer operated in multiple size categories when it was still an independent brand selling gasoline-guzzling models. The largest model was the Humvee-derived H1, with the full-size H2 and mid-size H3 below it.
