On Thursday, GMC unveiled the 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. The pickup brand promises a range of up to 400 miles for this electric truck, which will be available in early 2024, a reconfigurable midgate, numerous on-board outlets, and a high (initial) price of $108,695, including destination.

Based on GM's Ultium electric platform and a 200 kwh battery pack, GMC estimates that the Denali Edition 1 will run about 400 miles on a charge. A series/parallel switch that connects two 400-volt electric battery packs to allow for 800-volt charging allows the Sierra EV to achieve a range of 100 miles on a 350-kw charger with a 10-minute quick change.

Denali Edition 1 models will come standard with a 19.2kw on-board AC charging module.

GM did not provide full charging times or discuss how long it would take to charge on a 150kw charger or other charging information.

Like the 2024 Silverado EV, the Sierra EV features bi-directional charging and is compatible with GM Energy's Ultium Home product. This will allow the truck's battery to power the home in the event of a power outage.

With the available Ultium Power Bar (an accessory that plugs into the truck's charging port like a power strip), the Sierra EV can be used through up to 10 outlets, including one 240-volt plug and nine 120-volt plugs, to provide 10.2kw of It can supply power; GMC says the truck can charge another electric vehicle. It is unclear how much power the Sierra EV can output from its seven standard outlets without the Ultium Power Bar.

Different but identical in appearance

The GMC Sierra EV shares hardpoints under its metal skin with the Chevrolet Silverado EV, but its design is largely unique.

Fitting into the GMC lineup with a modern, futuristic twist, the Sierra EV has C-shaped LED daytime running lights with three horizontal LED charging indicators mounted below them, a split headlight design mounted at knee height, and features a Chevrolet Avalanche-like C-pillar. The front end features LED backlit surrounds with backlit GMC logos front and center on Denali Edition 1 models, and 35-inch rubber-wrapped 24-inch wheels fill the well.

Inside, the Sierra EV diverges from the current GMC lineup and its Chevrolet siblings with its unique dashboard and design. Instead of a wall of screens on the dashboard, the Sierra EV features an 11.0-inch digital meter cluster with a 16.8-inch portrait-style touchscreen featuring a screen-mounted volume knob and seven hard toggles mounted below it, Split things up for Denali Edition 1. These displays are complemented by a 14.0-inch color heads-up display.

The Denali Edition 1's standard fixed glass roof is said to reflect infrared rays and has a UV coating to prevent cabin roasting. Luxury models of the Denali Edition 1 will also feature quilted leather seats and, possibly for the first time, a wireless smartphone charger that inductively charges from the standard open-pore wood trim.

Like its Chevrolet Silverado EV sibling, the Sierra EV has a reconfigurable midgate for a 5-foot-11-inch bed like the Chevrolet Avalanche; the 60-40 split midgate can extend the bed into a four-door cab with a split-folding rear seat.

The rear window of the cab is stored in the midgate, which opens to form an 11-foot-long bed with the tailgate down using the Denali Edition 1 reconfigurable tailgate. With the tailgate up and the midgate folded, the Sierra EV can carry a 9-foot-long load.

Sierra EV lineup

GMC will begin taking reservations today for the 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, but the electric truck is only available in the year of its launch and in limited quantities.

In 2025, the Sierra EV lineup will expand with the addition of less expensive off-road-focused AT4 and Elevation models.

Although details were not given, a GMC team member told Motor Authority that the AT4 model will feature a 2-inch factory lift, rear-wheel steering, Crab Walk functionality, and model-specific design inside and out.

The Elevation model will have a base price of approximately $50,000, making it the least expensive Sierra EV model announced.

A GMC spokesperson said that the Elevation and AT4 models will be available with a variety of battery pack sizes and ranges. Future models could weigh less than the Denali and have higher payload and towing capacity.

Where will the GMC Sierra EV be manufactured?

GM will build the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 at Factory Zero, formerly known as the Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Plant, on the same line as the initial production of the GMC Hummer EV and 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV.
