Preview 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD Upgrades Interior, Adds ZR2 Grade
Chevrolet's Silverado 1500 has been updated for the 2022 model year, and now the truck's heavy-duty model has also been updated.
The updated Silverado HD, revealed late Monday in both 2500HD and 3500HD guises, will make its public debut at the 2022 Texas State Fair on September 29, and will go on sale next year as a 2024 model. Electric car fans can also look forward to the new Silverado EV coming in 2024.
Changes to the 2024 Silverado HD include styling tweaks, new cabin technology, and powertrain upgrades. An off-road grade, the ZR2, will also be available, but Chevrolet is withholding details until closer to launch.
The 2024 Silverado HD will be offered in regular cab, double cab, and crew cab configurations, with dual options limited to the 3500HD. Grades will include Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, High Country, and the new ZR2, and buyers can also add the Z71 Sport Appearance Package to some of these.
The biggest styling change is at the front, with a new grille and front end, as well as headlights of a more contemporary design. The traditional split headlights have been eliminated in favor of a single unit with C-shaped daytime running lights.
The interior has undergone even more significant changes. The new dashboard resembles that of the updated Silverado 1500, and the top grade is equipped with a new 13.4-inch infotainment screen (with built-in Google) that combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with an available heads-up display is equipped. The center console has also been redesigned, with a cleaner design for the wireless cell phone charger. Many of the physical controls feature new designs, and Chevrolet offers up to 10 cup holders, depending on model and configuration.
Chevrolet also offers a long list of standard or available electronic driver assistance features. These include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring. In addition to these, adaptive cruise control with a trailering function is also available. This feature is new for 2024 and allows adaptive cruise control to account for increased drag and braking distance when towing a trailer. There are also warnings when a vehicle's gross weight limit is exceeded, an extended distance for blind spot monitoring when loading a trailer, and updates to the transparent trailer feature to accommodate fifth-wheel trailers and gooseneck trailers.
Buyers will continue to have two powertrain choices. One is a 6.6-liter V-8 with 401 hp, 464 lb-ft of torque, and a maximum towing capacity of 17,370 lb. The other is a 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 with 470 hp, 975 lb-ft of torque, and 36,000 lb. The 2500HD drops to 22,500 lb. Compared to the previous model's 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque, the company says the diesel's performance has been improved, as well as its low-speed torque.
Also standard on all 2024 models is a 10-speed automatic.
Production of the 2024 Silverado HD will begin in early 2023 at plants in Flint, Michigan and Oshawa, Canada. Pricing information will be announced closer to market launch next year.
An updated version of the related GMC Sierra HD will also be available. A redesigned version of the rival Ford Super Duty series will be unveiled later Tuesday.
