Spy shots of the 2023 Volkswagen Passat Variant: a global redesign of the Passat
Volkswagen was spotted testing a prototype of the redesigned Passat. [VW calls it the Valiant.
The new Passat will not be landing in the US. This is because the Passat sold in the U.S. will be discontinued after 2022 and will use a different, less expensive platform than the Passat sold in other regions.
The Global Passat uses Volkswagen Group's MQB platform, and the new model will use an updated version of this platform. The Global Passat's twin, the Skoda Superb, will also soon be redesigned on the MQB platform. However, it will be available in both sedan and wagon body styles.
One might wonder why a sedan is not offered for the Passat. While this body style is on the decline in most markets except China, VW will soon have a replacement for the Passat sedan in the form of a production version of its 2018 ID.Vizzion concept car The ID.6 is currently code-named the Aero; the ID.6 is currently code-named the Aero.
An ID.6 wagon is also planned, and with any luck this model will also be seen in local showrooms.
Production of the new Passat will take place at the VW Group plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The powertrain lineup will consist of a series of inline four-cylinders, including a plug-in hybrid configuration. A redesigned Passat Alltrack should also be available.
