Spy shots and video of 2022 Volkswagen ID.5: electric coupe-like crossover coming soon

Volkswagen just launched the ID.4 earlier this year, but a new variation of the battery-electric compact crossover is coming soon: a coupe-like model called the ID.5, which VW plans to reveal later this year.

VW recently released a teaser shot of the ID.5 (shown in the gallery), suggesting a debut is imminent, but the latest spy shots and video show what this crossover will look like on the road.

Confirmation on the ID.5 was given by VW brand boss Ralf Brandstetter during a presentation at the Volkswagen Group's Zwickau, Germany plant in February. The ID.3 and ID.4 are being built at this plant, with the ID.5 to follow shortly.

VW has not indicated whether the ID.5 will land in the U.S. The ID.4 is already on sale in the U.S. and will eventually be produced in the U.S. U.S. production of the ID.4 will take place at the VW Group plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The ID.5 is currently expected to be introduced in the U.S. in early 2022 as the 2022 model year. Its cousin, the Audi Q4 Sportback E-Tron, will also be launched in Japan as a 2022 model.

The ID.5 looks almost identical to the ID.4, except for the curved roof that ends in a rear hatch. Also, the ID.5 has a small rear spoiler at the base of the rear windshield, whereas the regular ID.4 has a spoiler mounted on top.

Interior design is common to the two crossovers, with a 5.3-inch digital meter cluster in front of the driver and a large infotainment screen (standard 10.0-inch, also available in 12.0-inch) on the dashboard above the center stack. Storage space will be reduced from 64.2 cubic feet in the regular ID.4 due to a tighter rear cargo hold.

Powertrains are also common: The ID.4 comes standard with an 82-kilowatt-hour battery and a single electric motor producing 201 hp at the rear axle, with an optional all-wheel drive with an 82-kilowatt-hour battery and a 302-hp dual motor system An option will be available. Outside the U.S., the 302 hp option is sold as a distinctly sporty option called GTX, and the ID.5 is no different; the ID.4's EPA-rated range is up to 260 miles, and we expect the same for the ID.5.

Pricing for the ID.4 starts at $41,190 in the U.S., but will drop to $35,000 once local production begins; the ID.5 will likely be priced at a premium over its more practical sibling.

VW plans more ID-badged EVs. The list includes a subcompact crossover to be launched in 2025, a mid-size sedan and wagon to be launched in 2023, a mid-size crossover with no announced launch date, and a spiritual successor to the iconic microbus to be launched in 2022, but not in the US until 2023 year.
