Spy shots of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2: witness the next generation of midsize SUVs.

Chevrolet is testing a prototype of the redesigned Colorado, which is currently expected to be launched in 2022 as a 2023 model.

Our latest spy shots show a prototype of what appears to be the ZR2 off-road variant of the new Colorado.

A clear indication that this is an off-road-focused variant is the high ground clearance and Goodyear Wrangler MT tires. Although hard to find, the prototype appears to be fitted with 33-inch tires. The tires also appear to be a wider 285/70 set versus the current 265/65 set. In both cases, the wheels are 17 inches in diameter.

According to the photographer, the prototype was also equipped with Multimatic DSSV shocks developed specifically for the current Colorado ZR2. This setup combines sport-tuned DSSV shocks with the position-sensing damping favored by off-road racers. The result is an improved ride and handling, both on-road and off-road.

The final clue to seeing the new Colorado ZR2 under test is the word "ZR2" written in red inside the mesh camouflage gear around the taillight. The red ink penetrates through the mesh and emerges in reverse.

The redesigned Colorado is believed to use an updated version of the current model's 31XX platform, but this time the dimensions are slightly larger. The prototype is a crew cab short bed version, but single cab and long bed options should also join the redesigned Colorado lineup.

It makes sense for Chevrolet to stick with the current platform instead of investing in a new platform. By sticking with the current platform, the current powertrain portfolio can easily be carried over. This means that we can expect gasoline and diesel inline-4s, plus a gas V-6. Hybrid options may also be offered in the new generation.

General Motors is also known to be testing a prototype of a redesigned version of its Colorado twin, the GMC Canyon. Both will have to contend with the redesigned Ford Ranger when it appears next year.
