2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 spy shots and videos: a Prophecy concept to create a Model 3 competitor.
Hyundai was spotted testing a prototype of a small electric sedan called the Ioniq 6.
Under heavy camouflage it may look like a modern interpretation of the Dodge Neon, but the final design is expected to resemble the stunning Hyundai Prophecy Concept unveiled last year.
Some of the Prophecy Concept's more unusual features, such as joystick steering, will not make it to production. However, some of the concept's styling features, such as pixel-style lights and propeller-inspired wheels to reduce aerodynamic drag, can be seen on the prototype.
The Ioniq 6 is confirmed for a 2022 launch and will appear as a 2023 model, and will use the Hyundai Motor Group's E-GMP modular EV platform that debuted with the Ioniq 5 and will be shared with the related Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60 The platform will also be shared with the related Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60. The platform will also underpin a large crossover that Hyundai will launch in 2024.
The platform will have a 0-60 mph time of less than 3.5 seconds, a top speed of 161 mph, and a range of nearly 300 miles. These figures could be reserved for the Ioniq 6 N performance range-topping model, which Hyundai has teased in the past. Hyundai is already working on the Ioniq 5 N, with the 576 hp Kia EV6 GT already on the market.
The E-GMP platform also features an 800-volt electrical system, allowing charging at high kilowatt ratings. Another feature is bi-directional charging, which allows E-GMP vehicles to power equipment and homes and charge other EVs.
Hyundai has not announced that the Ioniq 6 will be sold in the U.S., but it could well be sold in the U.S. In May, Hyundai announced plans to invest $7.4 billion in its U.S. operations through 2025, most of which will be spent on expanding EV production.
The Ioniq 6 will compete directly against the Tesla Model 3 and somewhat against the more premium BMW i4 and Polestar 2.
More details of the Ioniq 6 will be revealed as development progresses.
